Itinerary
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp
Depart from Arusha/Moshi for Londorossi Gate, complete entry formalities, and then drive to the Lemosho trailhead. Embark on a 4-hour trek through the undisturbed rainforest, winding your way to the first campsite. (Distance: 6 km, Hiking Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Rain Forest)
Day 2: Forest Camp to Shira Camp 1
Transition out of the forest into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock adorned with lichen. Ascend through lush rolling hills, crossing streams before reaching the Shira Ridge. Descend gently to Shira 1 camp, presenting captivating views of Kibo Peak. (Distance: 8 km, Hiking Time: 5-6 hours, Habitat: Moorland)
Day 3: Shira Camp 1 to Shira 2 to Moir Hut
Explore the Shira Plateau extensively, walking east towards Kibo’s glaciered peak. Cross the plateau to Shira 2 camp, then continue to Moir Hut at the base of Lent Hills. Moir Hut serves as an acclimatization hub, offering diverse walks on Lent Hills. (Distance: 14 km, Hiking Time: 5-7 hours, Habitat: Moorland)
Day 4: Moir Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Ascend to the east up a ridge, crossing towards Kibo’s peak. Proceed southeast to the Lava Tower, followed by the Arrow Glacier. Descend to Barranco Hut, an essential acclimatization stop before summit day. (Distance: 7 km, Hiking Time: 4-6 hours, Habitat: Semi Desert)
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Depart Barranco, ascend the steep Barranco Wall, and continue to Karanga Valley campsite. Journey towards Barafu Hut, marking the completion of the South Circuit. The vistas of Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks are exceptional from this position. (Distance: 9 km, Hiking Time: 8-10 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert)
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut
Embark on the summit push in the early hours, traversing glaciers and ascending through scree to Stella Point. Gaze at a breathtaking sunrise from Stella Point, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro and in Africa. Begin the descent to Mweka Hut campsite, a challenging yet rewarding experience. (Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent, Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent, Habitat: Arctic)
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Moshi
Descend to Mweka Park Gate to collect your summit certificate. Continue the journey to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will transfer you to your hotel in Arusha/Moshi. (Distance: 10 km, Hiking Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Rain Forest)
