Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Rongai Cave

After obtaining permits at Marangu Gate, proceed to Nale Moru, the wooden village serving as the trailhead. Wind through fields of corn and potatoes, gently ascending through the forest. This lush environment is inhabited by diverse wildlife, including the Black and White Colobus Monkey. Your camp for the night is at Rongai Cave. (Elevation: 6,398 ft to 9,300 ft, Distance: 7 km, Hiking Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Rain Forest)

Day 2: Rongai Cave to 2nd Cave to Kikelewa Cave

Elevate your journey as you leave Rongai Cave after breakfast, embarking on a steady morning hike towards 2nd Cave, en-route to Kikelewa Cave. The path unfolds with a gradual incline, treating you to unfolding views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. A day of exploration and elevation awaits you. Day 3: Kikelewa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn

Embark on a shorter yet steeper hike, ascending a grassy slope from Kibo Cave to Mawenzi Tarn. The transformation of the landscape is captivating as you exit the heath zone and step into the alpine desert zone. Camp is nestled beneath the awe-inspiring spires of Mawenzi, where you can relax and appreciate the unique surroundings. Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn to Mawenzi Ridge to Mawenzi Tarn

Immerse yourself in acclimatization as you ascend Mawenzi Ridge, offering mesmerizing views on both sides. Traverse rugged and rocky terrain before returning to Mawenzi Tarn for camp. This additional day aids in acclimatization, a crucial step before the final ascent to the summit. Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Embark on a gradual climb across the lunar-like rocky landscape, traversing the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. Your campsite rests at the base of the Kibo crater wall. Prepare for the ultimate ascent with rest and readiness. (Elevation: 14,160 ft to 15,430 ft, Distance: 8 km, Hiking Time: 5-6 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert)

Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Point to Horombo Hut

Elevate your determination as you wake in the middle of the night for the final push towards Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. Traverse steep terrain to Gilman’s Point before the traverse along the crater rim leads you to the summit. Capture the awe-inspiring scenery and retrace your steps to Horombo Hut, reveling in your accomplishment. (Elevation: 15,430 ft to 19,341 ft to 12,205 ft, Distance: 22 km, Hiking Time: 10-13 hours, Habitat: Arctic)

Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Embark on a long yet mostly downhill trek, concluding your remarkable journey. Arriving at Marangu Gate, you collect your well-deserved certificate, a testament to your achievement. The day ends with a vehicle transfer to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. The additional acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn sets this itinerary apart from the 6-day route.
